Gifting a Couples Game: What Works for Which Couple

The best couples game to give is the one that fits a night the couple already has, not the night you think they should be having. A pair who talk for hours over dinner will wear out a question deck. A pair who argue happily over every board game will leave that same deck in a drawer. So before you look at a single box, look at the couple.

Who gives the game matters too. A gift that is sweet from a partner can be very strange from an aunt.

What makes a couples game a good gift?

A couples game makes a good gift when it plays with exactly two people, takes under five minutes to learn, and matches the couple’s energy on an ordinary weeknight. The player count is where most gifts fail. A game that needs four people waits for a group night that never comes.

A two-player game comes out of the box the night it arrives, and the gift that gets played on day one is the one they remember.

A 2014 study by Yuthika Girme and colleagues in Personal Relationships (196 individuals, then 83 couples) linked shared activities that felt satisfying, stress-free and closeness-building to higher relationship quality, at the time and 3 months later. The benefit leaned on both partners being invested, so a game one of them gets dragged into won’t do much.

“The couples who sustain a sense of mutual playfulness with each other tend to work out the wrinkles in their relationships much better than those who are really serious.”

Stuart Brown, MD, head of the National Institute for Play, speaking to NPR in 2014

Which game fits which couple?

The right couples game gift depends on how the two of them already spend time together, so start with their habits, not the shop shelf. Six profiles cover almost everyone, from the couple who talk for hours to the pair scrolling phones on the sofa by nine.

The couple The tell Give them Skip
The talkers Two-hour dinners, no phones A question or conversation deck Anything with a timer
The competitors Every game ends with “rematch” A two-player strategy game such as Jaipur or Codenames: Duet Pure question decks
The tired pair Kids, long shifts, phones on the sofa by nine A progressive deck that starts with easy questions Long setup, thick rulebooks
The new couple A few months in A light quiz or icebreaker game Anything spicy, especially from you
The long-distance pair Dates happen on video A deck one partner can read aloud, or an online game Dare decks and anything physical
The playful ones Flirting is how they talk An adult or spicy game, if you are the partner Handing it over in front of family

Once you know the type, the shelf is obvious: board games for couples for the competitors, question games for the talkers, icebreaker games for new couples, and our long-distance games guide for anyone living on video calls.

Does it matter who is giving the gift?

Who gives a couples game matters as much as who gets it, because the same box reads differently depending on your place in their lives. A partner can give almost anything. Friends have less room, and family should stick to games anyone could unwrap in public.

  • From one partner to the other. Anything goes, including our spicy games for couples. Hand it over with a plan to play it that night; the anniversary game night structure works for birthdays too.
  • From a close friend. An adult deck is fine at a bachelorette party. Otherwise, pick something you would happily explain out loud at the gift table.
  • From family or a coworker. Conversation, quiz and strategy games only. Nobody wants to unwrap a dare deck while their father-in-law watches.

Where does Loopy fit?

Loopy is the gift for the tired pair and the playful ones, and it covers both because the game climbs in levels instead of starting at full intensity. Loopy Game for Couples is a two-player card game with five decks: Talks, Fun Activities, Kisses, Fondles and Secret.

The Secret deck only comes into play if both players choose it. A couple who just want to talk can stay in the first two decks all night, which makes Loopy an easier gift than its 18+ label suggests, if you are the partner or a close friend.

Full disclosure: I co-created Loopy. When Ben and I play-tested it, we once spent a whole evening in Talks and never reached the other decks.

Loopy costs $29 in our shop and ships in a plain box with nothing on the outside that names the game. US orders arrive in 3 to 5 business days, packing included, according to our shipping page. Order a week ahead anyway. Refreshing a tracking page on the morning of an anniversary is nobody’s idea of romance.

Can love languages help you choose?

Love languages can help you guess a couple’s taste, as long as you treat them as shorthand and not as science. Marriage counselor Gary Chapman described five of them in his 1992 book The 5 Love Languages: words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service and physical touch.

A 2024 review by Emily Impett, Haeyoung Gideon Park and Amy Muise in Current Directions in Psychological Science found little evidence that people have one fixed love language, or that couples who match are happier. As a lens on what a couple enjoys, though, it is handy:

  • Quality time: a long question deck, no scoring.
  • Physical touch: a progressive deck with a flirty upper level.
  • Words of affirmation: prompts about what each admires in the other.
  • Acts of service: a cooperative game they win or lose together.
  • Receiving gifts: wrap it properly and write a card.

What should you check before you buy?

Check any couples game against five points before you pay: a real two-player count, one-page rules, content that fits how well you know them, enough in the box for more than one night, and delivery with days to spare. Fails two? Keep looking.

  • Two players is a real count. Lots of boxes say “2 to 6” and play badly at two.
  • The rules fit on one page.
  • The content fits how well you know them.
  • There is enough in the box for more than one night. Our couples card games guide puts a talking deck at well over a hundred cards.
  • It arrives with a few days to spare.

FAQ

What is a safe couples game gift if I do not know their taste?

The safest couples game gift is a two-player cooperative game or a question deck without an adult level, since neither assumes anything about the couple’s private life.

Is a couples game a good wedding gift?

A couples game works as a wedding gift when it rides alongside something from the registry rather than replacing it. On its own it can look like an afterthought. With a note suggesting they play it on the first quiet night after the honeymoon, it looks like you thought about them.

Can I give Loopy to a couple who does not like spicy games?

Yes, Loopy works for couples who only want conversation, because the Talks and Fun Activities decks make a full evening on their own and the intimate decks are optional. It is still an 18+ game, so give it to adults you know well, not to your nephew and his girlfriend of three weeks.
